For example, territorial anomalies are observed on the borders of such countries as the USA and Canada, Holland and Belgium. The Finnish-Swedish border, which lies on the small island of Merket in the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea, looks no less strange. The thing is that it has a bizarre Z-shape. What is the story behind this fact and why is the island the property of two states at once? Merket could rather be called a "skerry" - a small rocky island whose seashore is cut by narrow and long straits (fjords). It is the world's smallest island, divided between two nations. Geographically, it is located in the Södra-Kvarken Strait. Surprisingly, there are two time zones on the same island - just take a couple of steps to the side and the time will change.

OJ0JR, OJ0/UT5UY & OJ0/LB5SH – Market Reef

[NEWS UPDATE] Alex, OJ0/UT5UY reports that about 4000 QSOs from 80 to 10m using CW, SSB and FT8 have been made so far. However, there is “a very big storm now which destroyed some of our antennas, including low bands. When wind goes down we will try to repair our antennas. Now the lowest band is 30m.” Stian, LB5SH, Alex, UT5UY and Henri, OH3JR and the lighthouse crew prior to their departure to OJ0. There is a narrow weather window on Friday (September 16, 2022), the only possible chance for the next several days. If the attempt fails, the group will remain in Aland Islands and they will be QRV as OH0 while waiting for the weather to improve. The operation would last for seven (7) days but only if they are successful in landing on this Friday.

AUGUST 9 — RADIO ARCALA SALUTES JOE TAYLOR, K1JT AND THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM OF FT8 MODE ON HF PLUS ACTIVATE 4M MS FSK441 AND 60M. MARKET REEF, OJ0BH/OJ0JR QRV: 12th–19th August 2017. Tuning the poor 20m band month after month represents a major frustration nowadays. Particularly on SSB, only the occasional DX signal breaks the sea of noise, consequently reducing activity levels even further. However, that very noise could be a new lease of life, if one were to copy signals below it. They are there every day. Indeed, with their huge antennas and state-of-the art receivers, DXers can dig even deeper into the noise and log plenty of good DX faster than one can think.

Jari OH6BG informs DX-World readers of a new Märket Reef activity by Henri OJ0JR and Anne OJ0YL in August. Two callsigns will once again rise from one of the Baltic Sea’s most exposed operating locations: Märket Reef. More rock than island, more sea than shelter, Märket is the kind of place where every QSO begins long before the first CQ — with weather, landing conditions, antennas, power, and the constant presence of wind and waves. From August 15–22, 2026, Henri OJ0JR and Anne OJ0YL plan to activate Märket Reef, bringing this rare OJ0 entity back on the air for DXers around the world.

OJ0JR – Market Reef
