ZL7IO – Chatham Islands
I will return to Waitangi, Chatham Islands during May 25 to June 4, 2026. Participation in the CQWW WPX CW contest (May 30 & 31) in the SOAB category. Antenna maintenance will also be undertaken during the stay. We tried finding the noise source on 160m by driving around the area with the small flag antenna Chris built and finally were able to get some directivity. It always pointed to the diesel power station. There was a clear maximum radiating from the two poles where the feed in from the diesel plant into the 11 kV line is conencted. They are just under 1 km away from us. The noise peak is is at 2.2 MHz wiping out 160m and impacting 80m. This will not be sorted in time for the contest. Alternatively, we tested noise cancelling devices and the PLZ QRM Eliminator reduces the 160m noise significantly. I will be on 160m during my greyline tonight (~7 am UTC) in hope we can receive some signals. Watch 1840 kHz in FT8 and a bit lower in CW.
